WGA East Members at Gizmodo Ratify New Union Contract
NEW YORK, NY (March 24, 2025) — Writers Guild of America East (WGAE) members at the tech, science and design-focused online media outlet Gizmodo and management reached a deal on a new collective bargaining agreement. The contract was unanimously ratified by the 14-member bargaining unit who work as editorial staff.
Gizmodo, previously part of the G/O Media Union alongside Jalopnik, Kotaku, QZ, The Root and The Onion, was sold to Swiss company Keleops Media in 2024. This newly ratified contract is Gizmodo’s first under new management.
The 3-year contract maintains and builds on gains established in the G/O Media Union contract. Workers will receive guaranteed 3% annual raises for the duration of the contract. Workers also receive a 4% 401(k) employer match (up from 3%).
Additional highlights from the contract include:
- Artificial Intelligence protections: The company has agreed to reopen bargaining over effects in the event any new AI replaces any bargaining unit work;
- Transgender health and safety: Preserved WPATH compliance protections, as well as language protecting the right to have preferred name and pronouns used in the workplace;
- A minimum 12 weeks of severance;
- Work from home protections and flexibility for hybrid employees;
- The company will continue the practice of covering up to 10% of any healthcare premium cost increases;
- The company will continue the practice of $80 cellphone and 50$ wellness reimbursements;
- Maintains successorship language to protect the union in the event of a sale;
- Just Cause;
- Union Security.
The Gizmodo bargaining unit said, “The Gizmodo USA Union is excited to have a new contract with Keleops. We are looking forward to continuing to cover the tech industry with integrity. We’re excited to collaborate with management and grow in ways we were stifled before.”
