Tony Gilroy to Receive the WGA East’s Ian McLellan Hunter Award for Career Achievement at 76th Annual Writers Guild Awards
NEW YORK, NY (February 25, 2024) – Tony Gilroy will be honored with the Writers Guild of America East’s Ian McLellan Hunter Award for Career Achievement at the 76th Annual Writers Guild Awards at New York’s Edison Ballroom on Sunday, April 14, 2023.
The Hunter Award was established in 1992 and named in memory of longtime WGAE member Ian McLellan Hunter. The award is presented to a WGAE member in honor of their body of work as a writer in motion pictures or television. Past recipients include Spike Lee, Richard Price, Tom Fontana, Geoffrey Ward, Andrew Bergman, John Sayles, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, John Waters, Richard LaGravenese, Nora Ephron, Walter Bernstein, and Claire Labine.
Lisa Takeuchi Cullen, President of the Writers Guild of America East, said, “Tony embodies the best of what it means to be a Writers Guild member. He is an extraordinary talent who has written some of the most thought-provoking and exciting screenplays of the last 30 years. He is also a staunch union ally, one of our most trusted voices when it comes to advocating for writers’ rights, and he gave one of the best damn speeches on the picket lines last summer. We all wish we were Tony, but short of that we are thrilled to present him with this award.”
A WGA East member since 1986, Gilroy has had an extraordinary career writing film and television.
Gilroy’s most recent accomplishment is as the creator of the series “Andor.” The acclaimed series’ first season was nominated for two Writers Guild Awards, “Best Drama Series” and “Best New Series,” eight Emmy Awards including “Best Drama Series,” and won a Peabody Award. He was also one of the writers on “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”
His four screenplay adaptations of Robert Ludlum’s Jason Bourne series (“The Bourne Identity,” “The Bourne Supremacy,” “The Bourne Ultimatum,” “The Bourne Legacy”) set the bar for 21st century action-thriller films.
His 2007 masterpiece, “Michael Clayton,” earned seven Academy Award-nominations including “Best Picture,” and Gilroy himself was nominated for “Best Original Screenplay” and “Best Director.”
Gilroy’s other screenwriting credits include memorable films like “The Cutting Edge,” “Duplicity,” “Dolores Claiborne,” “Proof of Life,” and “The Devil’s Advocate.” Tony Gilroy is the son of the legendary screenwriter and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Frank D. Gilroy, who was honored with the Hunter Award in 2011.
The Writers Guild Awards honor outstanding writing in film, television, new media, news, radio, and promotional categories. The 2024 Writers Guild Awards (76th Annual) will be presented at concurrent ceremonies on Sunday, April 14, 2023, in New York City at the Edison Ballroom and in Los Angeles.
