The Writers Guild of America East invites members to attend events happening in Los Angeles and online this month.

The calendar below includes information on screenings, panels and committee meetings taking place in October.

RSVPs are not required for screenings at the Writers Guild Theater. You only need your Guild membership card to attend all screenings. All screenings take place at the Writers Guild Theater (135 S. Doheny Dr., Beverly Hills) and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Unless otherwise specified, you can bring up to TWO guests to screenings. You can find the latest list of upcoming Los Angeles screenings via the WGAW website. (external – opens in a new window)

Kick off Women’s History Month with an evening of story and creative conversation co-presented by the WGAW Latinx Writers Committee and the DGA Latino Committee. Join us as we celebrate the powerhouse all-Latina team that worked behind the camera to make Episode #307 of The Lincoln Lawyer. Written by Dailyn Rodriguez and Isabella Rodriguez, directed by Paula Garces and DP’d by Moira Morel – we’re honored to have all four hermanas joining us for a fireside chat after the episode screening. We’ll talk all about what it takes to cover a set and produce an episode of television – an experience that is happening less and less for TV writers. Moderated by Ilana Peña (Diary of a Future President, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend).

The Disabled Writers Committee advances the visibility and employment of disabled writers while encouraging, celebrating, and endorsing accurate and diverse portrayals of disabled people in all areas of media. We also serve as an expert resource for various issues impacting and related to the disabled community. Established in 1982.

This will be an interactive workshop focused on financial planning issues that apply specifically to writers. Topics will include setting yourself up for financial success – understanding the numbers you need to know to take the pulse of your financial health; where to put your savings – balancing availability of savings with long-term opportunities for growth and tax savings; how to grow your savings – arming yourself with the right information to make good investment decisions; and more. The NAIWC represents the professional and creative interests of Native American & Indigenous writers. It works to mentor, encourage, empower and increase the visibility of employment of writers of Native American & Indigenous heritage, and serves as a cultural and educational resource for all Guild member-writers seeking to portray Native American & Indigenous Peoples in their work. Established in 2007.

WGAW’s Writers Education Committee has a broad mandate to develop programs that provide Guild members with practical, inside knowledge about how the industry works and how it is changing, emphasizing tips and tools to help writers succeed. The goal is to provide working knowledge for writers.

Sleepless in Hollywood? Anxiety, Insomnia & the Truth About Sleep Disorders

Hollywood, Health & Society and Project Sleep invite you to a panel discussion on insomnia and lesser-known sleep disorders like sleep apnea and narcolepsy. Join us as we explore how TV storylines can dispel myths and illuminate the path to a truly restorative night’s sleep. Panelists include: Brent Miller, CEO and founder of A House on Brame Productions; Christopher Allen, MD, pediatric neurologist, a sleep medicine doctor and a person living with sleep apnea; Michael Grandner, MD, licensed clinical psychologist, director of the Sleep and Health Research Program at the University of Arizona; and Lauren Thomas, patient advocate living with narcolepsy and cataplexy. This committee actively represents the professional, creative, social and economic interests of Latinx Guild members. Its mandate is to encourage Latinx writers to become more active within the Guild; and to raise the profile and perception of Latinx writers in the industry at large by creating forums that foster networking, collaboration, education, information exchange, employment opportunities and creative expression. Established in 1977.

The Writers Guild of America West’s LGBTQ+ Writers Committee seeks to utilize its constituency as a resource to all writers who include LGBTQ+ characters in their work. Its members also wish to provide cultural and educational opportunities for WGAW members to nurture an understanding of how sexual orientation and gender identity affect the lives of writers; endeavor to provide networking and social activities enabling the WGAW membership to better know one another and create a greater demand for the writing services of LGBTQ+ WGAW members; and strive to generate a greater awareness within the Guild of sexual orientation (and gender identity) as a minority and, where appropriate, to identify and advocate against instances of homophobia, transphobia and/or discrimination within our industry. Established in 2002.

Futurism: How Do We Get From Here to A Good Place – A New Hope

At this event, presented by WGAW’s Genre Committee, we will learn more about how scientists are working to unlock the mysteries of our world and how that makes great storytelling for us, informing Guild members of intriguing developments in a variety of sciences and how these cutting-edge advances can be used to expand our storytelling. A panel of science advisers share what they are working on and how that can be implemented in TV and film, with a focus on how we can see hope in the future. Panelists include: Travis Chapa. Ph.D., Program Lead, Atara Biotherapeutics/L.A. City Health Commissioner (“The Science of Hope: How Biotech is Shaping a Brighter Future,” biotech/medicine), Erin Macdonald, Ph.D., science advisor to Star Trek franchise (advances in general relativity and gravitational waves), Randii Wesson, astronautics systems engineer, Lead Study Architect for JPL’s Innovation Foundry’s A-Team (deep space exploration/humans in space), and more TBA; moderator: Writers Guild Award-winning writer Kira Snyder (The Penguin, The Handmaid’s Tale).

HOW TO HAVE IT ALL: You can’t! But for now, a panel with women who have kids and also writing careers

The Committee of Women Writers is hosting this panel birthed from younger writers’ fears around pulling the trigger to start having children – especially as lower-level writers, and especially during an uncertain time in the industry. The goal of this panel is to be real and unfiltered about how difficult it is to navigate pregnancy and parenthood on top of everything else writers, and women specifically, go through in this career. These panelists will commiserate, reflect, and teach us how to attempt the impossible: having it all. Panelists will be announced soon!

The WGA women’s history month screening is alive and well and we’re gonna f&#!ing celebrate it. All are encouraged to join us for snacks, fellowship, and a 25th anniversary screening of 2000s era classic Erin Brockovich followed by a q&a with screenwriter Susannah Grant. Come celebrate women’s history and women who fight for a better world with the WGA’s Women’s Committee.
