Writing TV Movies: Where the Action Is?
WGAW 2nd Floor, Multi-purpose Room
RSVP
Although screenwriting jobs may seem elusive these days, there’s one area that remains relatively healthy and hiring: the TV movie world. Between romcoms, holiday fare, mysteries and thrillers on cable networks like Hallmark and Lifetime; independently made films that land on the small screen; and streamers that premiere theatrical-style comedies and action pictures, there’s substantial work to be had. Is it easy to find or get? Of course not. But if your focus has been on selling pilots, TV staffing, and theatrical gigs, and you’re not finding the opportunities, maybe it’s time to widen the net.
Monday, February 10, 7–9 p.m.

It’s the End of the World As We Know It
Zoom
RSVP
These days it seems like everyone’s talking about the end of the world, so naturally the subject is a ripe arena for storytelling. Presented by WGAW’s Genre Committee, this Guild panel will engage with writers of film and television projects which explore jarring and often horrifying topics like alien invasion, viral outbreaks, zombies, nuclear wars, robot mutinies, monsters, and environmental and space-based disasters. We’ll discuss why audiences are compelled to consume this type of content, what the market looks like for pitching and selling, and how stories about the end of the world shape culture and society. And when our conversation has met its untimely end, we hope writers will come away with a better understanding of what it takes to create these exciting and memorable stories.
Panelists include writers Andy Bobrow (Last Man on Earth), Eric Heisserer (Bird Box), Angela Kang (The Walking Dead) and Michael Tolkin (Deep Impact, The Rapture), as well as University of Chicago professors James Evans and Daniel Holz, authors of the recent New Yorker think piece, “Are We Doomed?;” moderator: Aaron Wiener (Resident Alien).

Integrating Mental Health in Storytelling
Zoom
RSVP
Presented by WGAW’s Writers Education Committee in partnership with The Hollywood Committee, an organization dedicated to changing the narrative around mental health in film and television, this Guild panel brings together leading writers and experts to explore storytelling’s critical role in addressing America’s mental health landscape. Maintaining mental health, like physical health, is a universal part of the human experience – and mental illness introduces a myriad of interesting complex narratives. This panel offers insights on how to authentically portray characters working to maintain their mental health and navigate mental illness, featuring writers and clinicians who have successfully integrated these elements into their work. We’ll examine how writers can break down stigma, navigate nuanced mental health journeys, and create narratives that resonate with diverse audiences. Discover how addressing mental health can enrich your storytelling, inspire empathy, and drive meaningful action. Panelists include writers Morgan Cooper (Creator-showrunner, Bel Air), Michael Grassi (Creator-showrunner, Brilliant Minds), Alexa Junge (The United States of Tara), and Shawn Ryan (Creator-showrunner, The Night Agent, The Shield), Noopur Agarwal (Vice President Social Impact, Showtime-MTV-Paramount Global) and Ashley Kolaya, USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative); moderator: Ken LaZebnik (When Calls the Heart, Touched by an Angel).
