Briefing with The Committee to Protect Journalists

The Committee to Protect Journalists is an independent, nonprofit organization that promotes press freedom worldwide. Press freedom is increasingly under threat in authoritarian regimes and democracies alike. In 2019, 25 journalists were killed in connection to their work, and for the fourth year in a row, at least 250 journalists are behind bars. Last year, the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker documented nine journalists arrested or facing criminal charges, and 38 physical attacks on journalists. CPJ continuously responds to these fast-paced changes through their ongoing reporting, advocacy, journalist assistance and emergency response.

This presentation will provide an overview of CPJ’s research and data, with a focus on CPJ’s work in the USA. This includes documenting ongoing threats through the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker, research on threats to female and gender non-confirming journalists in non-hostile environments, and safety planning for journalists covering the 2020 US elections.

In July, the Committee to Protect Journalists unionized with the Writers Guild of America, East. You can read about it here.

RSVP Cancellation Policy
Three-Strike Rule

We understand that unplanned issues can come up and you may need to cancel your attendance at an event. If that happens, you must provide adequate notice of your cancellation or else you will incur a late-cancellation penalty.

For all events, unless otherwise specified, you must cancel at least 24 hours prior to the beginning of the event to avoid a penalty.

Cancellations must be made by email to events@wgaeast.org; phone cancellations will not be accepted.

After missing three screenings without sending a cancellation notice to events@wgaeast.org within the defined window, you will be notified that you have been placed on a three-month hiatus from attending WGAE screenings.

Please note that is your responsibility to track your reservations and strikes. You will only be notified upon your third and final strike that you have been placed on hiatus.

Our priority is ensuring that our programming is robustly attended and accessible to all members. We hope this policy will enable us to better serve the needs of all members.
