Starlee Kine

Candidate for Council, Film/TV/Streaming Sector

Hi! I’m Starlee and I’m running for WGA Council. I assume my name is written above as well as something like “council nominee” so that bit is probably redundant. Which, thanks to the strike, cannot be said about writers.I’ve been writing for television for the past nine years.

I wrote on the shows Search Party and Dave. Before that I worked in audio, starting at This American Life.

During the strike, I was active in the production shutdowns. We were a tight group and it felt meaningful. I’ll never forget how it felt the night of the first production shut down where there were just a handful of us, walking in a little circle. The show’s crew saw us and didn’t cross. They sat down across the street, where they stayed all night. As long as they were there, we were there. We were in it together.

I believe in solidarity. In looking out for each other. In helping make sure no one falls through the cracks.

We have an incredible union, that much was clear during the strike. I believe there is work to be done to help carry that sense of solidarity out post-strike as well. Getting a sense of who is struggling or even just too idle and then providing resources and community. Harnessing our networks. Being creative and practical about how to help writers advance, gain experience and pay rent. It’s a hard, strange time in this industry. We don’t have to be weathering it alone.
