Sara David

Candidate for Vice President, Online Media Sector

I’ve been a proud WGAE member since 2017 and a Council representative for Online Media since 2021. In that time, I’ve made member advocacy a top priority, establishing and collaborating on resources like the VICE Guide to Layoffs, the WGAE Code of Conduct, and OM Shop Steward training modules.

As the media industry is consolidating—with new mergers and acquisitions announced seemingly every week—our newsrooms and publications face intense contraction. Jobs are drying up as companies create less original content and rely on existing IP and work outsourced to AI.

We’re seeing unprecedented job loss as layoffs become more frequent and inhumane, and we know from existing studies and surveys that layoffs disproportionately impact marginalized and under-represented workers. While we are losing invaluable voices in the present, companies are also deleting our histories from the web in a misguided effort to protect their bottom line. For example, Paramount+ removed the web archive of MTV News—a WGAE shop that had a flourishing, award-winning BIPOC-focused audience and workforce with pioneering cultural commentary—with no notice or warning, erasing entire careers and portfolios on an executive whim.

As media companies consolidate their power, they refuse to let workers do the same. My focus as VP of Online Media is to build worker solidarity and empower members with the knowledge, network, and tools to organize robust, company-wide bargaining units, and win precedent-setting contract terms that ensure a humane and sustainable future of media.

Over the next two years, my goals in OM are: to establish more Shop Steward and Weingarten trainings, to establish a clear member-to-leader pipeline, and to create a living and evolving database of the WGAE’s most progressive contract terms to use as a bargaining template.
