Resources and support for members impacted by the Los Angeles wildfires

With the ongoing wildfires across Los Angeles, we want to keep Guild members updated on emergency financial assistance and resources including shelters, supply distribution, animal boarding and more.

This page is divided into two primary sections:

• Find Support (for members impacted by the wildfires)
• Show Support (for members & allies in a position to help with aid and recovery needs)

WGAE staff will update this page regularly to add additional resources, but we encourage you to refer to the linked resources directly as they will receive direct updates from organizations and community members.

Find support

General Information

LAist Fire Recovery Resources

LAist, an NPR-affiliated radio station located in Pasadena, has compiled a data and resource hub that includes a list of local evacuation centers for both humans and animals, places to shower and get food, and more. The website also includes specific resources for those seeking mental health assistance, as well as food or childcare, specifically.

Hardship Resources for Entertainment Workers document

Initially created during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the Hardship Resources for Entertainment Workers guide has since evolved into a living document with myriad forms of hardship support, most recently for workers impacted by the LA fires.

The Entertainment Workers Affected by LA Fires section of the Hardship Resources document offers comprehensive information ranging from general guidance to links to support, including: a “first steps” guide to the most important information and actions to take, an evacuation checklist, crisis resources for a range of needs, support for people who have lost homes and property, support for apartment residents, and guidance on health and safety after a wildfire.

Medication information for WGA members

Guild members who have lost their medications and it’s “too soon” to refill should contact the PWGA’s Eligibility Department by phone at (818) 846-1015 (press 1, then press 2) or by email. PWGA staff will handle the necessary overrides.

Resource Databases

Humanitas and Mutual Aid LA Network (MALAN) have each compiled databases of available wind and storm resources including general information, shelter and emergency housing, supply distribution, evacuation support, medical/medication assistance, animal boarding and horse hauling, and more. Both databases are regularly updated.

Financial Relief

• If you are a WGA East member seeking a grant from the the Writers Guild Member Fund, please contact WGAE General Counsel Ann Burdick.
• Entertainment Community Fund and Motion Picture & Television Fund. Entertainment Industry workers can apply for financial assistance from the Entertainment Community Fund and the Motion Picture & Television Fund. ECF’s application asks for a list of documents to be uploaded. If a document is unavailable, upload a blank file to move the application forward.
• Los Angeles County Federation of Labor and its community service arm, Labor Community Services, have launched relief efforts for union members and their families.
• Jewish Free Loan Association (JFLA) is offering zero-interest and zero-fee loans up to $15,000 for temporary housing and other emergency needs.
• Through Union Plus’s Hardship Help benefits, WGAE members may be eligible for benefits including disaster relief grants, hospital grants and more financial assistance options.
• The D-Word, an online community of documentary professionals, have set up a mutual aid WhatsApp group chat to ask for help and offer support.
• Writer Fundraiser List — Humanitas is maintaining a list of fundraisers for writers* who have lost their homes or have otherwise had their lives upended by the ongoing fires. If you know of similar fundraising efforts, please email info@humanitasprize.org with “Fundraiser for Writer” in the subject line. *Fundraisers are listed on the second tab of the spreadsheet.
• Crewmember Fundraiser List — The entertainment worker community has created an ongoing list of crewmember fundraisers – via GoFundMe or elsewhere – supporting Hollywood crew members who have been directly impacted by the wildfires. If you want to submit a crew member’s fundraiser link to be included in this list, please email the fundraiser link and names of crew member(s) and their position to LoveULAcrew@gmail.com. These fundraiser lists are a grassroots effort and, because of the urgent need happening, it will not be possible to factcheck every fundraiser to guarantee authenticity.

Food

LA Times List of Food & Shelter for Fire Victims

Dozens of LA County restaurants are offering free food, discounts and shelter to fire evacuees. View the updated list via the Los Angeles Times. The publication has built an interactive map of 47 restaurants and counting that are providing free or discounted meals to those affected by the fires. Each listing includes up-to-date information regarding the establishment’s location, hours, pricing, and type of cuisine.

TimeOut List of Free Food for Fire Evacuees

Find a curated list of eateries offering food and shelter amid the wildfires, broken down by neighborhood, provided by TimeOut, which also gives details about how to apply for such aid.

LA Infatuation List of Restaurants Offering Support

On the outlet’s Instagram, LA Infatuation has provided a list of restaurants with free food for evacuees and first responders, encouraging others to add additional businesses that are providing support in the comments section. LA Infatuation notes that “some of these restaurants should be contacted via DM before walking in” and that information is subject to change as fires continue.

Housing & Shelter

Listings Project is a community offering free access to carefully vetted real estate, job, and services offered listings weekly. In response to the wildfires, Los Angeles listers can post “Seeking Living Space” listings for free using the code LAFREESEEKING25. 

List of Animal Shelters — Secret Los Angeles has created a list of available animal shelters for refuge from the fires, in accordance with LA County Animal Care & Control. The lineup is separated between small and large animals, and indicates whether or not each facility has remaining space for pets in need.

Airbnb Temporary Housing — Airbnb has partnered with 211 LA to offer free temporary housing to those who have been displaced or forced to evacuate from the wildfires. Certain qualifications must be met to receive accommodation, including living in the current evacuation zone and having an Airbnb account. Those in need of a place to stay can request aid by filling out this intake form with 211 LA.

You can also visit the LA Fire Mutual Aid Resources website and click on the “Volunteers and Donations Needed” button to filter a map of resources based on current support needs.

Fundraisers

Support your fellow members through the Writers Guild Member Fund.

To help members who have lost their home or been displaced by the wildfires, the Guild is launching a Writers Guild Member Fund with the Entertainment Community Fund (ECF) to provide grants for affected writers. A number of Guild members and the Board have already committed over $700,000 to this fund to support fellow writers. If you can support this effort, please consider donating to the Writers Guild Member Fund. The ECF continues to do incredible work for the entire entertainment community and writers can also support its general Fund.

You can also give to the Motion Picture & Television Fund as they provide assistance to those in the entertainment community affected by the wildfires.

Organizations

• Contribute to Labor Community Services’ Los Angeles Fire Relief Fund — LCS is also ready to accept donations of goods that will be distributed to those at emergency relief shelters. A list of accepted items and information on dropoff locations is on the LCS Fire Relief Fund website.
• Donate to a MALAN-approved mutual aid fund or organization — open the spreadsheet and search for the phrases “monetary donation” and “financial donation” to find entries
• Donate to Anti-Recidivism Coalition to support incarcerated firefighters (write “Firefighter fund” in the donation comments).
• National Day Laborer Organizing Network — Immigrant day laborers, undocumented workers, and mixed-status families who have been impacted by the fires face the additional burden of fear and uncertainty when seeking shelter and emergency services. The Pasadena Community Job Center is currently serving as an emergency center for the day laborer community, providing temporary shelter, food, water, and emergency kits. Donate here to support immigrant workers impacted by the California fires.

This list also includes links to other community-specific fundraisers, so it is a good place to look for fundraisers to donate to.

If you’re able to offer shelter, visit Airbnb.org for more information on how to sign up to host, free of service fees and with damage protection insurance included at no extra cost. And nonlocal people looking to help can donate directly to the company’s emergency response.
