Los Angeles Events Calendar – September 2024

The Writers Guild of America East invites members to attend events happening in Los Angeles and online this month.

The calendar below includes information on screenings, panels and committee meetings taking place in August.

RSVPs are not required for screenings at the Writers Guild Theater. You only need your Guild membership card to attend all screenings. All screenings take place at the Writers Guild Theater (135 S. Doheny Dr., Beverly Hills) and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Unless otherwise specified, you can bring up to TWO guests to screenings. You can find the latest list of upcoming Los Angeles screenings via the WGAW website. (external – opens in a new window)

This committee actively represents the professional, creative, social and economic interests of Latinx Guild members. Its mandate is to encourage Latinx writers to become more active within the Guild; and to raise the profile and perception of Latinx writers in the industry at large by creating forums that foster networking, collaboration, education, information exchange, employment opportunities and creative expression. Established in 1977.

The Writers Guild of America West’s LGBTQ+ Writers Committee seeks to utilize its constituency as a resource to all writers who include LGBTQ+ characters in their work. Its members also wish to provide cultural and educational opportunities for WGAW members to nurture an understanding of how sexual orientation and gender identity affect the lives of writers; endeavor to provide networking and social activities enabling the WGAW membership to better know one another and create a greater demand for the writing services of LGBTQ+ WGAW members; and strive to generate a greater awareness within the Guild of sexual orientation (and gender identity) as a minority and, where appropriate, to identify and advocate against instances of homophobia, transphobia and/or discrimination within our industry. Established in 2002.

Putting Pregnancy and Abortion Stories Into Context

The Writers Guild Foundation, in partnership with Storyline Partners, hosts this conversation on contextualizing pregnancy and abortion storylines in the current political and social climate. The panel will explore how writers approach these storylines holistically by addressing how public policies–or lack thereof–can create disparities in access to healthcare, childcare, and workplace flexibility. Panelists include Elena Crevello (American Auto), Steph Herold (Researcher, Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health), and Charlotte Stoudt (The Morning Show). Moderated by Vicki Shabo (Better Life Lab at New America) Panel starts at 4:00 p.m. Pacific Time. RSVP for free or with a suggested donation of $10. Hear from showrunners, writers, directors, editors, and other post production professionals with their tips before you find yourself in the editing bay. Presented by WGAW’s Writers Education Committee, this panel will examine the current state of the feature spec market, as we hear from reps, execs, and writers with first-hand knowledge to help Guild members navigate an ever-changing industry. A one-day seminar designed to give the first-time staff writer a crash course in the skills necessary for success in their new profession. The seminar is taught by current writer-producers of some of the biggest shows on television.
