The Writers Guild of America East invites members to attend events happening in Los Angeles and online this month.

The calendar below includes information on screenings, panels and committee meetings taking place in August.

RSVPs are not required for screenings at the Writers Guild Theater. You only need your Guild membership card to attend all screenings. All screenings take place at the Writers Guild Theater (135 S. Doheny Dr., Beverly Hills) and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Unless otherwise specified, you can bring up to TWO guests to screenings. WGAW’s Genre Committee was formed with the purpose of attracting writers interested in a certain genre, to meet, discuss and exchange information in a peer-to-peer setting. Our mission is to push education, diversity and camaraderie amongst all writers no matter their background. The Committee welcomes all writers because writers work in all genres. Members welcome to attend this meeting in-person or via Zoom. Food & beverages served from 6-7 p.m. Special guest Bradley Gallo (Co-Founder and President of Film & Television of Amasia Entertainment) will appear via Zoom at meeting start at 7 p.m.

Middle Eastern Writers Committee Meeting

The mission of the Middle Eastern Writers Committee is to boost visibility and employment of Middle Eastern writers within the film and television industry, while celebrating and promoting accurate portrayals of Middle Eastern characters in all areas of media. We also serve as an expert resource for productions on issues related to the vast and diverse Middle Eastern community in the United States and abroad. Established in 2020.

Dollars & Sense: A Financial Roundtable from the Writers’ POV

In a Post-Peak TV industry, now, more than ever, knowing how to stretch a dollar, get out of credit card debt, paying off loans, and saving for retirement or to buy a house is knowledge that should be shared and built upon at every stage in order to give writers a fighting chance for a long career. This informative panel aims to be an entry point to provide advice and guidelines for how writers can save for lean times. We’ll answer questions like: How much to save, and how to save when you don’t have a job, how to get out of debt in order to achieve financial stability, and more. Panelists: VJ Boyd (Co-Executive Producer, S.W.A.T., Co-Developer/EP, Lincoln Rhyme: Hunt for the Bone Collector), Johanna Lee (Star Trek: Discovery, Scandal), Kat Likkel & John Hoberg (American Housewife, Galavant), Ron McCants (Cross, Chicago Fire), and David Slack (Showrunner, MacGyver, Magnum P.I.); moderator: Christina M. Walker (Producer, 9-1-1: Lone Star); presented by WGAW’s Writers Education Committee.

The Writers Guild Foundation teams up with Stephens College MFA in TV and Screenwriting for a conversation about writing female characters in leadership roles. Panelists include Alexandra Fernandez (Station 19), Joan Rater (A Small Light), and Zora Bikangaga (The First Lady). Moderated by Dr. Rosanne Welch (Executive Director, Stephens College MFA in TV and Screenwriting). RSVP for our in person event with a $5 or $10 donation. Zoom livestream tickets can be reserved for free or with a suggested donation. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. All proceeds go towards producing future panels and events.

Committee of Women Writers Meeting

The Committee of Women Writers represents the professional interests of the women-identifying Guild members who are seeking WGA-covered work. The CWW sponsors events designed to increase access to employment and to foster networking and collaboration between the women-identifying members of all Guilds. The goal is to improve the profile and perception of women-identifying writers in our industry in order to achieve equal access and financial parity in the workplace. Established in 1972.

The Writers Guild Foundation, in collaboration with Storyline Partners, will host this virtual panel discussion analyzing the history and current state of representing trans people on- and off-screen. Panelists include Sydney Baloue (Legendary, Tom Swift), Our Lady J (Pose, Transparent), Chloe Keenan (Q-Force, Single Drunk Female), Nori Reed (Raven’s Home), and ND Stevenson (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power). Monday Mash-Up Mixer Madness

Come see how one idea can be done as a drama, procedural, genre (sci-fi/procedural/horror), and comedy/animation. Come to mix and observe the writers’ rooms in action, or you can sign-up the night of on a first-come basis to be a participant in one of the rooms, each of which will be led by upper-level writers, including Robert Hewitt Wolfe (The Irrational, Elementary), Michael Narducci (Superman & Lois, The Originals), Jen Richards (The Acolyte, Her Story), and Mara Vargas Jackson (The Resort, Acapulco). Four groups of up to six writers will be given a set-up for a series and will have an hour to come up with the pilot logline, world and series. The protagonist, setting, and genre will be pulled from a bag into which attendees have dropped their ideas as they enter. Food & beverages served from 6-7 p.m.; event starts at 7 p.m.; hosted by WGAW’s Genre Committee.

The Jewish Writers Committee represents the professional, creative, and social interests of Jewish writers of all backgrounds and levels of observance and offers a sense of community. It educates and advocates with the goal of encouraging the accurate depiction of Jewish characters and Jewish history in the media. It promotes Jewish inclusion on and off the screen, working to prevent discrimination in the hiring process. Established in 2024.

The Writers Guild Foundation, in partnership with the Writers Guild of America West and Variety, present our annual event celebrating the Emmy-Nominated writers for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series and Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series with two back-to-back panels at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills. Tickets are $20 for WGA members. Doors open at 6 p.m. Program begins at 7 p.m. All proceeds benefit the Writers Guild Foundation’s Library, Archive and Community Outreach Programs.
